N: 1. gynoid (adj): From the Greek gyno, gynaikos meaning woman + -oid, a word-forming element from Latinized form of Greek -oeides, from eidos “form.
Gyneco, gyno, gyn, and gyne are combining forms meaning woman.
gynoid: gynecoid, relating to or characterized by the distribution of body fat chiefly in the region of the hips and thighs (gynecoid obesity).
obesity (n): 1610s, from French obésité and directly from Latin obesitas “fatness, corpulence,” from obesus “that has eaten itself fat,” past participle of obdere “to eat all over, devour,” from ob “over” + edere “eat”.
2. Excess storage of fat located primarily in the buttocks and thighs.
3. The two main types of obesity are categorized according to body fat distribution and are designated android or central obesity and gynoid or peripheral obesity. Individuals with android obesity have the majority of their fat deposits located in the abdominal area whereas individuals with gynoid obesity have their major fat deposits located subcutaneously in their lower body (hips and lower extremities).
4. For the gynoid type of obesity or fat distribution, the excess fat are being deposited somewhere at the hip and thigh areas. Their hips are rounded and their buttocks generally look larger than normal. Thus, people who are gynoid obese are called pear obese because they have a body form that looks strikingly similar to the shape of the pear fruit. But despite such, gynoid obese individuals are said to be at a much safer position than the android obese individuals for they are less at risk in developing chronic illnesses linked to obesity and overweight.
