N: 1. – drug (n): Late 14c., drogge (early 14c. in Anglo-French), “any substance used in the composition or preparation of medicines”, from Old French droge “supply, stock, provision” (14c.), which is of unknown origin. Perhaps it is from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German droge-vate“dry barrels,” or droge waere, literally “dry wares” (but specifically drugs and spices), with first element mistaken as indicating the contents, or because medicines mostly consisted of dried herbs.
– trafficking (n): From present participle of traffick or traffic (v.), 1540s, “to buy and sell”, from traffic (n.) and preserving the original commercial sense. Related: Trafficked; trafficking; trafficker. The -k- is inserted to preserve the “k” sound of -c- before a suffix beginning in -i-, -y-, or -e- (compare picnic/picnicking, panic/panicky, shellac shellacked).

2. Drug trafficking is a global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws.

3. Drug trafficking is often associated with other forms of crime, such as money laundering or corruption. Trafficking routes can also be used by criminal networks to transport other illicit products.

4. Drugs are related to crime in multiple ways. Most directly, it is a crime to use, possess, manufacture, or distribute drugs classified as having a potential for abuse (such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and amphetamines). Drugs are also related to crime through the effects they have on the user’s behavior and by generating violence and other illegal activity in connection with drug trafficking.
