Often due to “wear and tear”, pain and swelling can occur when the cartilage breaks down. Eventually, the cartilage may wear away entirely and bones will rub together.
4. degenerative joint disease (DJD); degenerative arthritis: (Osteoarthritis) has always been classified as a noninflammatory arthritis; yet, there is increasing evidence for inflammation occurring with cytokine and metalloproteinase release into the joint. Therefore, the terms “degenerative joint disease (DJD)” (and “degenerative arthritis” may) no longer (be) appropriate when referring to (osteoarthritis).
