N: 1. – surrogate (n): Early 15c., from Latin surrogatus, past participle of surrogare/subrogare “put in another’s place, substitute,” from assimilated form of sub “in the place of, under” + rogare “to ask, propose,” apparently a figurative use of a PIE verb meaning literally “to stretch out (the hand),” from root *reg- “move in a straight line.” Meaning “woman pregnant with the fertilized egg of another woman” is attested from 1978 (from 1972 of animals; surrogate mother in a psychological sense is from 1971). As an adjective from 1630s.
– mother (n): Meaning “female parent, a woman in relation to her child,” Middle English moder, from Old English modor, from Proto-Germanic *mōdēr (source also of Old Saxon modar, Old Frisian moder, Old Norse moðir, Danish moder, Dutch moeder, Old High German muoter, German Mutter), from PIE *mater- “mother” (source also of Latin māter, Old Irish mathir, Lithuanian motė, Sanskrit matar-, Greek mētēr, Old Church Slavonic mati), “[b]ased ultimately on the baby-talk form *mā- (2); with the kinship term suffix *-ter-” [Watkins]. Spelling with -th- dates from early 16c., though that pronunciation is probably older. Sense of “that which has given birth to anything” is from late Old English.
2. A woman who becomes pregnant by assisted reproduction for the purpose of carrying the fetus to term for another person or persons.
3. There are two types of surrogacy:
a) Traditional or straight surrogacy. It is when a surrogate mother uses her own egg fertilized by the intended father’s sperm. This is done by artificial insemination.
b) Gestational or host IVF surrogacy. It is when the surrogate mother carries the intended parent’s genetic child conceived through IVF.
