Protozoa (n): 1828, from Modern Latin Protozoa, coined 1818 by German zoologist Georg August Goldfuss (1782-1848) from Greek protos “first” + zoia, plural of zoion “animal”. Originally including sponges and corals; current sense is from 1845.
-iasis (suffix): infection related with protozoan and parasites.
2. Infection with or disease caused by protozoan parasites.
3. Examples of diseases related with protozoiasis are: amoebiasis, giardiasis, visceral leishmaniasis, toxoplasmosis or malaria.
