N: 1. “drug which induces hallucinations,” 1954, from stem of hallucination (“a seeing or hearing something which is not there,” 1640s, from Latin hallucinationem, nominative hallucinatio, earlier alucinatio, noun of action from past participle stem of alucinari) + -gen (word-forming element technically meaning “something produced,” but mainly, in modern use, “thing that produces or causes,” from French -gène (18c.), from Greek -genes “born of, produced by,” which is from the same source as genos “birth,” genea “race, family,” from PIE root *gene- “give birth, beget,” with derivatives referring to procreation and familial and tribal groups).

  • Adjective: hallucinogenic.
  • Frequent use in plural: hallucinogens.

2. Hallucinogen, substance that produces psychological effects that tend to be associated with phenomena such as dreams or religious exaltation or with mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Hallucinogens produce changes in perception, thought, and feeling, ranging from distortions of what is sensed (illusions) to sensing objects where none exist (hallucinations). Hallucinogens heighten sensory signals, but this is often accompanied by loss of control over what is experienced.
3. Hallucinogens (also known as psychedelics) can make a person see, hear, smell, feel or taste things that aren’t really there or are different from how they are in reality.
Some plants such as magic mushrooms can cause hallucinations. Hallucinogens such as LSD can also be made in a lab.
4. The effects can also extend beyond perceptions to changes of thought, mood and personality integration (self-awareness).The term is somewhat misleading as the hallucinogenic substances do not generally cause true hallucinations (i.e. sensory perceptions in the absence of external stimuli). However, the term is widely accepted by the scientific community.
