N: 1. From Latin cervico- + Greek odynē, pain.
2. Discomfort or more intense forms of pain that are localized to the cervical region. This term generally refers to pain in the posterior or lateral regions of the neck.
3. Musculoskeletal pain in the posterior neck area between the base of the skull and the shoulder.
4. Create a term that means “pain of the neck.”
There are two possible options: cervicalgia and cervicodynia. Either one is technically correct. There is no harm in asking a colleague which term should be used. As you converse with and listen to your fellow medical professionals, you will quickly learn the preferred terminology.
