N: 1. Late 18th century: modern Latin, from Greek ousōt- ‘ear’ + -itis ‘forming names of inflammatory diseases’. From Greek feminine form of adjectives ending in -itēs (combined with nosos ‘disease’ implied).
2. Inflammation of the ear, which may be marked by pain, fever, abnormalities of hearing, hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo.
3. We can distinguish between two types of middle ear infections: acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME). Otitis media is characterized by the accumulation of infected fluid in the middle ear, bulging of the eardrum, pain in the ear and, if eardrum is perforated, drainage of purulent material (pus) into the ear canal.

And their symptoms can vary depending on the person and depending on how advanced the infection is:

-ear pain
-irritability
-difficulty sleeping
-tugging or pulling at the ears
-fever
-yellow, clear, or bloody discharge from the ears
-loss of balance
-problems hearing
-nausea and vomiting
-diarrhea
-decreased appetite
-congestion

Another type of otitis is external otitis, which is characterised by  an inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal and auricle.  Malignant otitis externa refers to temporal bone osteomyelitis (inflammation of bone and bone marrow).

The symptoms of external otitis are:
-itching, pain or discomfort in the ear canal
-a watery discharge from the ear canal
-dry flaky skin around the outside of the ear and along the canal
-the ear canal starting to close up due to swelling and inflammation
-reduced hearing (in severe cases)
-discomfort moving the jaw when chewing or speaking.
4. Otitis externa can also be seen as: swimmer’s ear.
