N: 1. “substance developed in blood as an antitoxin,” 1901, a hybrid formed from anti- “against” + body. Probably a translation of German Antikörper, condensed from a phrase such as anti-toxischer Körper “anti-toxic body” (1891).
2. Antibodies may be produced when the immune system mistakenly considers healthy tissue a harmful substance. This is called an autoimmune disorder.
3. Each type of antibody is unique and defends the body against one specific type of antigen.
4. As antibodies circulate, they attack and neutralize antigens that are identical to the one that triggered the immune response. Antibodies attack antigens by binding to them.
5. The term “immunoglobulin” refers to the concept from the point of view of chemical structure, whereas the term “antibody” refers to it from the point of view of function.
