N: 1. magnetic (adj): 1610s, literal; 1630s, figurative, from Modern Latin magneticus, from Latin magnes (see magnet).
resonance (n): mid-15c., in acoustics, “prolongation of sound by reverberation;” 1660s, “act of resonating;” from Middle French resonance (15c.), from Latin resonantia “echo,” from resonare “to sound again” (see resound). Earlier in same sense was resonation (early 15c.).
imaging (n): From image (verb), late 14c., “to form a mental picture (of something), imagine,” from Old French imagier, from image (see image (n.)). Related: Imaged; imaging.
A noninvasive diagnostic technique that produces computerized images of internal body tissues and is based on nuclear magnetic resonance of atoms within the body induced by the application of radio waves—called also MRI.
2. A procedure in which radio waves and a powerful magnet linked to a computer are used to create detailed pictures of areas inside the body.
3. These pictures can show the difference between normal and diseased tissue. NMRI makes better images of organs and soft tissue than other scanning techniques, such as CT or X-ray. NMRI especially useful for imaging the brain, spine, the soft tissue of joints, and the inside of bones.
4. The technique is called magnetic resonance imaging rather than nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) because of the negative connotations associated with the word nuclear …
