N: 1. early 15c. (late 13c. as a surname), “owner of a tenement, one who rents land or property to a tenant,” from land (n.) + lord (n.).
2. Two definitions:

  • the owner of property (such as land, houses, or apartments) that is leased or rented to another.
  • the master of an inn or lodging house: innkeeper.

3. Urban Housing & Property Law (civil law): A person or oganization that owns and leases apartments to others. French equivalent: propriétaire bailleur. Spanish equivalent: arrendador, casero.
4. Property Law (common law): A person of whom lands or tenements are held by a tenant in leasehold tenure. (Adkin’s, 17th ed., 1983, p. 2). French equivalent: locateur.
