N: 1. – Hashimoto (pn): Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is named after the Japanese surgeon who discovered it in 1912. It is an autoimmune disorder, which means it occurs when immune cells attack healthy tissue instead of protecting it. In the case of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, immune cells mistakenly attack healthy thyroid tissue, causing inflammation of the thyroid. Autoimmune diseases affect women more than men, and women are 7 times more likely to have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
– thyroiditis (n): New Latin. First Known Use: circa 1885.
From adjective thyroid (1690s, in reference to both the cartilage and the gland, from Greek thyreoiedes “shield-shaped” -in khondros thyreoiedes “shield-shaped cartilage,” used by Galen to describe the “Adam’s apple” in the throat-, from thyreos “oblong, door-shaped shield” -from thyra “door,” from PIE root *dhwer- “door, doorway”- + -eides “form, shape”) and -itis (word-forming element in medicine denoting “diseases characterized by inflammation” -of the specified part-, Modern Latin, from Greek -itis, feminine of adjectival suffix -ites “pertaining to”).
2. The diffuse infiltration of the thyroid gland with lymphocytes, resulting in diffuse goiter and progressive destruction of the parenchyma and hypothyroidism.
3. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not only the most common form of thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) but also the most common thyroid disorder in America. The disease, which is also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis, affects 14 million people in the United States alone.
