New Latin erythroblastōsis fētālis : erythroblastōsis, erythroblastosis + fētālis, fetal.
From erythro- (before vowels, erythr-, word-forming element meaning “red,” from Greek erythro-, comb. form of erythros “red” -in Homer, also the color of copper and gold-), blasto- (before vowels blast-, word-forming element used in scientific compounds to mean “germ, bud,” from Greek blasto-, comb. form of blastos “sprout, germ,” which is of unknown origin) and -osis (word-forming element expressing state or condition, in medical terminology denoting “a state of disease,” from Latin -osis and directly from Greek -osis, formed from the aorist of verbs ending in -o. It corresponds to Latin –atio).
fetalis (adj): New Latin, fetal (adj.): 1811, from stem of fetus + -al. foetal (adj.): see fetal.
2. The adult human body is home to trillions of red blood cells (erythrocytes). These blood cells carry oxygen, iron, and many other nutrients to their appropriate places in the body. When a woman is pregnant, it is possible that her baby’s blood type will be incompatible with her own. This can cause a condition known as erythroblastosis fetalis, where the mother’s red blood cells attack those of the baby as they would any foreign invaders.
Also known as hemolytic disease of the newborn, this condition is highly preventable. Catching it early can ensure a successful pregnancy for mother and child. If left untreated, this condition can be life-threatening for the baby.
