N: 1. -amide: also amide, in chemical use, 1850, word-forming element denoting a compound obtained by replacing one hydrogen atom in ammonia with an element or radical, from French amide, from ammonia + -ide.
2. Organic compound derived from an oxoacid in which an acidic hydroxy group has been replaced by an amino or substituted amino group.
3. Among inorganic contaminants that can be treated by hydrolysis are metals that react with water: metal carbides (calcium carbide), hydrides (sodium aluminum hydride, NaAlH4), amides (sodium amide, NaNH2), alkoxides (sodium ethoxide, NaOC2H5) and halides (silicon tetrachloride, SiCl4).
