N: 1. Mueller (pn): Müller (right spelling). Walther Müller (1888–1949) was a German orthopedic surgeon. Müller described the “double navicular” as an osteological manifestation in a patient who developed a severe deformity of the navicular bone in both feet. In 1928, Müller attributed its aetiology as a congenital origin, not traumatic, being the compression the cause of this alteration
– Weiss (pn): Konrad Weiss (1891 – 1976) was an Austrian radiologist. Weiss is credited with early descriptions of Müller-Weiss syndrome, the dissecting aortic aneurysm, and gastric torsion. He was a founding member of the Austrian Radiological Society.
– syndrome (n): “a number of symptoms occurring together,” 1540s, from medical Latin, from Greek syndrome “concurrence of symptoms, concourse of people,” from syndromos “place where several roads meet,” literally “a running together,” from syn- “with” (see syn-) + dromos “a running, course” (see dromedary). 2. A rare bone disease characterized by spontaneous adult-onset tarsal navicular osteonecrosis.
3. Patients present with chronic mid- and hindfoot pain, swelling and tenderness over the dorsomedial aspect of the midfoot, flattening of the medial longitudinal arch, and pes planovarus. Radiographic findings include comma-shaped deformity due to collapse of the lateral part of the navicular bone and medial or dorsal protrusion of a portion or the entire bone.
The condition may be bilateral or asymmetric and associated with pathological fractures.
