N: 1. – food (n): Middle English foode, fode, from Old English foda “food, nourishment; fuel,” also figurative, from Proto-Germanic *fodon (source also of Swedish föda, Danish föde, Gothic fodeins), from Germanic *fod “food,” from PIE *pat-, extended form of root *pa- “to feed.”

Food chain is by 1915. Food poisoning attested by 1864; food processor in the kitchen appliance sense from 1973; food stamp (n.) is from 1962.

– aid (n): early 15c., aide, “war-time tax,” also “help, support, assistance,” from Old French aide, earlier aiudhaaid, help, assistance,” from Late Latin adiuta, noun use of fem. of adiutus, past participle of Latin adiuvare “to give help to,” from ad “to” (see ad-) + iuvare “to help, give strength, support, sustain,” which is from a PIE source perhaps related to the root of iuvenis “young person” (see young (adj.)).

The meaning “thing by which assistance is given” is recorded from 1590s; the sense of “person who assists, helper” is from 1560s. The meaning “material help given by one country to another” is from 1940.

  • A transaction by which food commodities destined to human consumption are provided to a recipient country, a group of people or a beneficiary entity either on a fully grant form or on a concessional loan basis.

3. “food assistance” in the fields of Economic Co-operation and Development and International Relations:

  • This paper adopts the definition proposed by the Trans-Atlantic Food Aid Dialogue (TAFAD) group of NGOs [non-governmental organizations] – food assistance includes “any direct food or food procurement transfer to food insecure individuals or households for the purpose of increasing the quality and/or quantity of food consumed.” This definition includes both transfers in the form of food and cash intended to improve directly food consumption of by food insecure individuals. It would not include commodity aid intended as a financial transfer (programme budgetary support or monetization) or agricultural inputs.
