2. Filariasis, a group of infectious disorders caused by threadlike nematodes of the superfamily Filarioidea, that invade the subcutaneous tissues and lymphatics of mammals, producing reactions varying from acute inflammation to chronic scarring.
3. Filariasis can be divided into three main groups according to the body area they tend to occupy:

  1. Lymphatic filariasis.
  2. Subcutaneous filariasis.
  3. Serous cavity filariasis.

4. Filaria: A name formerly used as a genus to include some members of the superfamily Filarioidea, now classified in a variety of genera.
5. Heartworm disease (canine dirofilariasis): is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs, cats, and ferrets. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis.
