N: 1. “hydropsy” see “dropsy”: late 13c., a shortening of Middle English ydropsy, from Old French idropsie, from Latin hydropsis, from Greek hydrops (genitive hydropos) “dropsy,” from hydor “water”.
2. Three meanings:
- edema.
- distension of a hollow organ with fluid <hydrops of the gallbladder>.
- hydrops fetalis.
3. dropsy, anasarca, hydrops:
- Generalized edema; an accumulation of interstitial fluid in the subcutaneous connective tissue and the serous cavities of the body.
The term “anasarca” was recommended by the Medical Signs and Symptoms Committee..
