N: 1. 1891, a hybrid from appendix (1540s, “subjoined addition to a document or book,” from Latin appendix “an addition, continuation, something attached,” from appendere. Used for “small outgrowth of an internal organ” from 1610s, especially in reference to the vermiform appendix. This sense perhaps from or influenced by French appendix, where the term was in use from 1540s) + -ectomy (word-forming element meaning “surgical removal,” from Greek -ektomia “a cutting out of,” from ektemnein “to cut out,” from ek “out” + temnein “to cut”).
2. An appendectomy is surgery to remove the appendix when it is infected. This condition is called appendicitis. Appendectomy is a common emergency surgery.
3. There are 2 types of surgery to remove the appendix:

  1. Open appendectomy. A cut or incision about 2 to 4 inches long is made in the lower right-hand side of your belly or abdomen. The appendix is taken out through the incision.
  2. Laparoscopic appendectomy. This method is less invasive. That means it’s done without a large incision. Instead, from 1 to 3 tiny cuts are made. A long, thin tube called a laparoscope is put into one of the incisions. It has a tiny video camera and surgical tools. The surgeon looks at a TV monitor to see inside your abdomen and guide the tools. The appendix is removed through one of the incisions.
