N: 1. The word “biotope” is derived from two Greek words “bios” (meaning life) and “topos” (which means place).
2. A biotope is a small area, such as the bark of a tree, that supports its own distinctive community.
3. While the definition of biotope makes it an ecological issue, the term is also used in political and administrative contexts. The term is popularly used closely with the preservation, creation, and regeneration of natural environments.
4. Biotope is a relatively recent term as it was first coined by the 20th-century German professor, F. Dahl in 1908. However, as a concept, Ernst Haeckel referred to an ecosystem he labeled as biota in 1866, the earliest reference of a biotope in history.
5. Bogs, marshes, cane brakes, and wet meadows rich in rushes und sedge, spring areas, near-natural non-built-up stream sections, land-forming areas of stationary waters, open inland dunes, dwarf shrub heaths, marsh and flood-plain forests, pine-oak woods, oak-beech woods, oak-hornbeam woods, lean and dry grasslands, wet meadows, near-natural fresh meadows, gravel, sand and marl quaries, country hedges and fruit trees and shrubs in open landscape are all legally protected biotopes in Berlin. These are the most important, but also the most endangered biotope types.
6. The German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation would like to share experiences on the mapping of marine biotopes with European partners and scientists. The seminar focusses in particular on the discussion of standards and protocols for the demarcation and mapping of classified biotopes such as EUNIS, HELCOM HUB and Special and Predominant habitats according to the MSFD.
