N: 1. – international (adj): 1780, coined by Jeremy Bentham from inter- “between” + national (adj.). In the phrase international jurisprudence.
– adoption (n): mid-14c., from Old French adopcion or directly from Late Latin adoptionem (nominative adoptio) “a taking as one’s child,” shorter form of adoptatio, noun of action from past participle stem of Latin adoptare “chose for oneself, take by choice, select, adopt,” especially “to take into a family, adopt as a child,” from ad “to” + optare “choose, wish, desire,” from PIE root *op- “to choose”.
2. International adoption (also referred to as intercountry adoption or transnational adoption) is a type of adoption in which an individual or couple becomes the legal and permanent parent(s) of a child who is a national of a different country. In general, prospective adoptive parents must meet the legal adoption requirements of their country of residence and those of the country whose nationality the child holds.
International adoption is not the same thing as transcultural or interracial adoption. However, the fact is that a family will often become a transcultural or interracial family upon the adoption of a child internationally.
3. When an adoptive family begins to explore the idea of adopting a child, it is easy for them to quickly become overwhelmed with information, questions and decisions.
One of the first dilemmas families face is whether to pursue domestic adoption or international adoption. There are many factors adoptive parents must consider: cost, wait time, children available, medical and social history and legal concerns.
