N: 1. First used in 1919. From aero- “air” and first syllable in solution.
A term in physics; modern commercial application is from 1940s.
2. A colloid system in which solid or liquid particles are suspended in a gas, especially a suspension of a drug or other substance to be dispensed in a fine spray or mist.
3. A system of liquid or solid particles uniformly distributed in a finely divided state through a gas, usually air. Aerosol particles, such as dust, play an important role in the precipitation process, providing the nuclei upon which condensation and freezing take place. They affect climate by reflecting or absorbing incoming solar radiation and enhancing the brightness, and thus reflectivity, of clouds. They also participate in chemical processes and influence the electrical properties of the atmosphere.
4. Though true aerosol particles range in diameter from a few nanometres to about one micrometre, the term is commonly used to refer to fog or cloud droplets and dust particles, which can have diameters of more than 100 micrometres.
5. In the fields of Special Packaging, Pollutants and CBRNE Weapons, the term “aerosol container” is a container equipped with a dispensing valve … to retain the compressed liquefied gas that acts as the propelling agent for the discharge of the contents through the valve. Synonyms: aerosol bomb, aerosol dispenser, aerosol can, pressure pack, pressurized pack, spray can, aerosol, aerosol spray can.
