N: 1. 1853 in political sense, American English, from de- + colonization. Earlier as a medical term.
2. It is the process by which colonies become independent of the colonizing country.
3. Décolonisation was used by a french writer advocating withdrawal from Algeria in 1836, and by the Indian Communist M. N. Roy in the 1920s; but the first academic to do so was a German expatriate working in London in 1932. Twenty years later it featured in the title of a book by Henri Labouret, a French colonial reformer. He treated decolonization as the natural climax to the period of colonial rule, whose advent was however being imprudently expedited by contemporary pressures.
4. The Committee of 24 is a Special Committee on Decolonization in charge of regarding the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence of Colonial Countries and Peoples (also known as the Special Committee on decolonization or C-24).
5. When the United Nations wants to refer to the territories which are not decolonized, they refer to them as non-self governing territories. Nowadays, there are still 16 non-self governing territories.
6. Cultural Interrelation:
Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) is a movie made against the background of decolonization in 1970s. The plot is about how Lawrence as a British officer united the different warring Arabian tribes against the Ottoman Empire in the First World War.
