N: 1. bulimia (n): 1976, Modern Latin, from greek boulimia, "ravenous hunger" as a disease, literally "ox-hunger," from bou-, intensive prefix (originally from bous "ox;" see cow (n.)) + limos "hunger," from PIE root leie- "to waste away."
nervosa (adj): Latin nervōsa ‎(“nervous”).
As a psychological disorder, technically bulemia nervosa. Englished bulimy was used from late 14 century in a medical sense of "ravishing hunger."
2. Bulimia nervosa, or bulimia, eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by inappropriate attempts to compensate for the binge, such as self-induced vomiting or the excessive use of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. In other cases, the binge eating is followed by excessive exercise or fasting. The episodes of binge eating and purging typically occur an average of twice a week or more over a period of at least three months, and repetition of the cycle can lead to serious medical complications such as dental decay or dehydration.
3. The term "bulimia" is often used for "bulimia nervosa" an emotional disorder in which eating is followed by deliberate vomiting and purging. This may be a chronic stage of "anorexia nervosa."
