N: 1. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig disease or motor neuron disease, degenerative neurological disorder that causes muscle atrophy and paralysis. The disease usually occurs after age 40; it affects men more often than women. ALS is frequently called Lou Gehrig disease in memory of the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig, who died from the disease in 1941.
2. Because Charcot made the first clinical description in the 1860s, the disease is named for him in Europe. In the United States (and Canada), the disease often is called Lou Gehrig disease after the baseball legend who died from ALS in 1941.
3. Cultural interrelation: We can mention the book My Brief History (2013) written by Stephen Hawking and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with Stephen Hawking (1942-2018).
