N: 1. - Kawasaki (pn): Tomisaku Kawasaki published the first English-language report of 50 patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) in 1974.
- disease (n): Early 14c., from Old French desaise (‘discomfort, inconvenience’), des- (‘dis = without, away’) + -aise (‘ease = physical comfort, undisturbed state of the body; tranquility, peace of mind’).
2. A severe, exanthematous illness principally affecting children, especially from age 2 months to 9 years. It is characterized by high fever, pharyngitis, stomatitis, strawberry tongue, cervical lymphadenitis, arthralgia, diarrhea and a polymorphic exanthem in which there is induration and edema of the skin, red palms and soles and peeling of finger tips.
3. Kawasaki disease is an illness that involves the skin, mouth, and lymph nodes, and most often affects kids under age 5. The cause is unknown, but if the symptoms are recognized early, kids with Kawasaki disease can fully recover within a few days. Untreated, it can lead to serious complications that can affect the heart.
Kawasaki disease is most common among children of Japanese and Korean descent, but can affect all ethnic groups.
4. Cultural Interrelation:
  • Reality: We can mention when Kawasaki saw his first case of Kawasaki’s disease in January 1961 in a 4-year-old boy when he was a staff pediatrician at the Red Cross Hospital in a suburb of Tokyo.
  • Fiction: We could mention episode 5 The confession from the TV series (2004-2012) House M. D. (season 8).
